5 signs you’re ready for the next step in finance

Your job is going well. The numbers add up, the close runs smoothly, and your colleagues know where to find you for the tough questions. And yet there’s that question that pops up every now and then: is this it?

That feeling rarely means there’s anything wrong with your job or your employer. Often, it just means you’re keen for something different: more variety, new sectors, different ways of working. And that’s exactly the right moment to stop and think about what the next step might bring.

The only question is: how do you know if the time is really right? Here are five signs you might recognise.

1. YOU'RE NO LONGER LEARNING ANYTHING NEW

The month-end closing, the reporting cycle, the recurring discussions with the business: you carry them out without really giving them a second thought. That’s the result of expertise, but also a sign that your learning curve has levelled off. Some people then seek out a new challenge within their organisation. Others find themselves looking for one just outside the organisation.

2. YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT NEXT YEAR LOOKS LIKE

Finance runs on cycles. You know when the audit is due, when the budget round begins and which reports need to be ready by when. That predictability is one of the profession’s strengths, but anyone who can already fill in their agenda for next year down to the last detail knows that little new will come their way. For some, that’s reassuring. For those seeking more variety, it might be a sign to look further afield.

3. YOU’RE CURIOUS HOW IT'S DONE ELSEWHERE

How does another company handle its reporting? Do they still work in Excel, or is everything already streamlined in Power BI? How is a finance team structured in a completely different sector? That curiosity keeps you sharp.

Within a single organisation, you often get to know one way of working very thoroughly. When you realise you want to know more than your current environment can offer, that’s a clear sign you’re ready for more variety.

4. YOUR GROWTH HAS STALLED, BUT YOUR AMBITION HASN'T

The next step in your current organisation isn’t there, or won’t be available soon, or isn’t the right one. Perhaps the role above you is filled for the next few years, or the direction you want to take doesn’t align with what the company needs. Your ambition is still there; it’s just that the scope to fulfil it isn’t. This is one of the clearest signs.

5. YOU WANT TO BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS, NOT GO DEEPER

You have a solid foundation in controlling or accounting, and you’ve realised that specialising further in that same role offers you less than it did a few years ago. What you’re looking for is breadth: different sectors, different systems, different challenges. It is precisely at this point that many finance professionals consider a move into consultancy. Not as an escape from finance, but as a faster way to grow within it.

FROM SIGNALS TO DECISIONS

A single sign doesn’t mean much. If you recognise several of these signs, it’s worth taking a closer look at your options. Consultancy is one of them, especially if you’re looking for more variety in sectors, systems and ways of working.

As a consultant, you’ll work with a wide range of organisations, building up knowledge with each assignment that you can take with you to the next one.  In this way, you gradually build a broader professional profile. At Hyphen, you won’t be doing this alone. As a boutique consultancy, we provide personalised support to every consultant: together, we look for assignments that align with your career goals and continue to support you throughout the project. And alongside your project, you remain part of a close-knit team you can always turn to. You share experiences with other consultants, learn from one another and can always find someone to bounce ideas off.
