From Audit to Consultancy
Moving away from the checklist, seeking real impact
Audit is a safe starting point for young people fresh out of school. It’s a great experience and keeps doors open for the rest of your career. You learn quickly, work with a variety of clients and build a solid foundation. That was the path Machteld followed too.
By Hyphen
As an auditor, Machteld worked for major clients in the banking sector. She learnt to adapt quickly, analyse figures and cope with tight deadlines. But despite the valuable experience, she soon sensed that something was missing from her role.
“In audit, you usually work retrospectively - you analyse what has already happened. But I felt an ever-stronger need to look ahead, to improve processes and to be closer to the business.”
That realisation led her to start exploring other avenues. Consultancy came into the picture, and not long after, Hyphen too.
Embarking on a new path
At the end of the summer of 2023, Machteld started as a finance consultant. During her first project as a Business Controller, she ensured continuity whilst also helping to optimise the financial processes.
She immediately became part of the team and was quickly able to make an impact with her fresh perspective. That combination proved immensely valuable to her. The project was initially scheduled to last three months, but her contribution was greatly appreciated. She was given the opportunity to stay on for longer and to further develop her role. Today, she is working on an ERP implementation, where she is helping to set out the framework for efficient and semi-automated finance processes.
I was immediately trusted and given responsibility. You feel that your work makes a difference, and that your impact keeps growing.

What makes the difference
Machteld finds the variety of projects and roles enriching, but the learning opportunities are also important to her.
“You find yourself in a different context every time, which means you’re constantly challenging yourself. At the same time, there’s a large network of consultants and freelancers you can consult or ask questions of. That combination ensures I can continue to develop both professionally and personally.”
She also emphasises the importance of training. For example, she has already delved into reporting, digitalisation and tools such as Power BI: “That digital side of finance is becoming increasingly important. It’s fascinating to be right in the middle of it all right now, and to actually help shape it.”
Her advice for those on the fence?
“If you feel you’re stagnating in audit, look further afield. In consultancy, you’re not stuck in a rigid framework - you can really chart your own course, grow and make an impact. You’re working to address a genuine need for the client, and that makes all the difference to how you experience your role.”
